Updates

News from Motmot: new features, game modes and improvements. You see the same updates on the home screen of the app.

Birdr is now Motmot!

Birdr has a new name: Motmot. Same game, same birds, same community, just a new name and a fresh look.

Why Motmot?

To be honest, many people found Birdr hard to spell. No wonder: the name is a misspelling itself. Motmot is easy to remember and easy to type.

Motmots are colourful birds from Central and South America, famous for their racket-shaped tails, which they swing like a pendulum. We think that's a cheerful bird to name a birding game after.

Meet Tody

Our new mascot is Tody, a Tody Motmot. You'll see Tody throughout the app, cheering you on, celebrating your high scores and sharing your frustration when you mix up two warblers again.

Miss Bertie?

No problem. Bertie, the illustration style you know, is still there. Go to your profile and choose Tody, Bertie, Classic or no illustrations at all.

New colours, new website

The app now uses greens, light blue and ochre, the colours of the motmot itself. The website has a fresh design too: motmot.club

Your account, scores, leagues and flocks stay exactly as they were. You don't need to do anything.

Thank you for playing, and please keep sharing your feedback at info@motmot.club!

🏆 New! The National league

Want to test yourself against other birders from your country? The National league is a daily bird quiz where everyone in your country gets the same birds. That makes it a fair fight.

Every day there’s a new quiz: 15 birds on weekdays, 30 at weekends, with a daily winner.

Every week your daily scores add up to the weekly table, and on Sunday night we crown the weekly champion.

Collect caps for your daily and weekly wins.

The Netherlands, Italy and Lithuania have already kicked off their leagues. Is your country next?

Get the latest version of Birdr from the App Store or Google Play and join your country’s league!

New Games & Improvements!

We've added some exciting new features to Birdr!

🏆 National League – Compete with other bird enthusiasts and climb the rankings!

❤️ Survival Mode – How long can you keep going? Test your bird knowledge and try to survive!

🔍 Better Bird Comparisons – We've improved the way you compare similar species, making it easier to spot the differences.

As always, Birdr is 100% free, with no ads!

Birdr is better with more birders

Birdr is growing and I’d love it to grow as a community project

Birdr isn’t a company or a commercial app. It’s a free-time volunteer project, built because I enjoy birding, building things, and helping people get better at identifying birds.

It’s 100% free, ad-free and open source, and I’d like to keep it that way.

But there’s a lot to do, and this is where you can help!

You don’t need to be a developer. There are lots of ways to contribute:

Review bird photos

Thousands of images are used in the quizzes, and many still need checking. If you know the birds of a particular country or region, even reviewing a handful of images helps.

https://birdr.pro/media-review/

Share your bird knowledge

Help improve descriptions of confusing species and lookalike birds. Local birders often know the little details that make the difference.

Test Birdr and give feedback

Found something confusing? A wrong bird? A bug? Or have an idea that would make Birdr better? Please tell me. Honest feedback is incredibly useful.

Help spread the word

Tell your birding friends, share Birdr in your local bird club, Facebook group or WhatsApp group, or mention it in your club's newsletter. The more birders who use Birdr, the more feedback we get and the better it becomes.

Help find partners

Do you know a bird club, conservation organisation, nature education organisation, university, museum, bird observatory or other group that might be interested in Birdr? An introduction would be very welcome.

Support the project

Birdr costs money to run — servers, storage, AI services and other infrastructure all add up. If you or your organisation would like to donate or help cover some of those costs, please get in touch.

Most importantly, you don't have to make a big commitment. Review five photos, report one bad image, suggest an improvement, introduce Birdr to a local bird club, or simply tell another birder about it. It all helps.

I'd love Birdr to become something that isn't just my project, but something birders around the world help build together.

Thank you - and happy birding!

Having problems? Please update!

The previous version of Birdr had some gameplay issues. This is fixed in the new version. Please go to Google Play to update to version 1.103.0 Orinoco Goose.

A new Birdr update!

Many birders around the world have been trying Birdr lately. Thank you for being among the first to use the app, and a special thank-you to everyone who has shared feedback. It helps enormously!

Based on your comments, we’ve made several improvements:

More languages

Birdr is now available in multiple interface languages. You can select your preferred language from the menu in the top-right corner.

Improved sound games

All bird sounds should now play correctly. Please let me know if you still experience any issues.

Faster gameplay

We’ve reduced image sizes, so games load faster and use less data, especially useful on slower connections.

New illustrations

Not a fan of Bertie Birdr, our game character in the beanie? You can now select a completely new illustration set in your profile.

Let me know what you think of the updates, and happy birding, indoors or out!

Flocks have landed in Birdr!

Birdwatching is more fun together. With the new Flocks feature, you can now join forces with friends, fellow birders, or your local bird club.

A Flock is your own group within Birdr. Members can play bird-identification challenges, compare their results and climb the group leaderboard together. Each Flock has its own name, logo and invite link, making it easy to bring your birding community into the game.

With Flocks you can:

  • Compete in a private leaderboard
  • Challenge friends and club members
  • Practise birds from your group’s country
  • Share an invite link to welcome new members
  • Discover who really knows their birds—and which species still catch everyone out

We’re starting by creating Flocks for local bird clubs in the Netherlands and the UK. If your club already has a Flock, simply follow its invitation link to join. Want a Flock for your own club, team or group of friends? Let us know!

Gather your flock, start playing and see who flies to the top.

Make sure you update Birdr to the latest version to play Flocks.

Improved tricky birds

We've improved the Tricky Birds section!

You can now practice the birds you've missed most often or focus on confusing species pairs. Once you score 18 out of 20 correct, you've conquered that particular weak spot!

We've also added links to documentation and identification guides, so you can dive deeper into the key characteristics of each tricky bird.

Happy learning, and happy birding! 🐦

New: Tricky birds!

🆕 New Feature: My Tricky Birds!

We've added a brand new feature to Birdr: My Tricky Birds. You can find it in the menu on the right.

It includes two helpful lists:

🐦 Most Missed Birds – the species you struggle with the most.

🔀 Confusing Pairs – species that you regularly mix up.

To help you improve, we've also introduced a new Confusing Pairs game mode. You'll see multiple photos of just two similar species and have to choose the correct one. It's the perfect way to finally tell Little Crake from Baillon's Crake, or master those tricky pipits!

Give it a try and let me know what you think. Your feedback helps make Birdr even better!

Don't see it in the menu yet? Make sure to update the app to version 1.80.0 Pied-billed Grebe

Have you tried the new features?

Recently we've added some exciting new features to Birdr – Bird ID Quiz App!

Country Challenge

The Country Challenge has had a major overhaul.

It now starts off nice and easy, so reaching level 2 shouldn't be much of a challenge. But don't get too comfortable — as you climb the ranks, things get a lot tougher!

The highest levels are built around the species that Birdr users most often get wrong. Expect sneaky little brown jobs, confusing warblers, mysterious shorebirds, and all kinds of feathered tricksters waiting to ruin your streak.

Good luck!

My Checklist

Brand new: My Checklist.

Here you can see every species you've identified correctly, as well as the ones you've missed. It's a great way to track your progress and discover which birds still need some practice.

Gotta catch them all!

Expertise levels

Just getting started with birding? You can now play at Beginner level, featuring only the most common birds in your country.

Feeling more confident? Move up through Novice, Advanced, Pro, and even Expert levels.

Each step adds more challenging species, including rarities and vagrants that occasionally turn up where they're least expected.

How far can you go?

Ready to put your birding skills to the test?

Open Birdr, pick your challenge, and see how far you can climb. Whether you're learning your first robin or trying to separate impossible-looking sandpipers, there's always a new species waiting to surprise you.

Happy birding, and good luck out there!

Got to catch them all!

We've got a new version in the app and play stores! We added a nice little feature where you can see which birds you already have seen in your country, during Birdr games. Please let me know what you think of the improvements at info@birdr.pro.

10.000 games played!

Wow! Already 10.000 games have been played by some 1500 different players. I'm still busy improving the app, but it is great to see so many birders play games and many of you return to play more!

Please share if you like the app, buit also if you see things that could be improved! Share it through info@birdr.pro, or rate the app in Game Store / App Store.
